Pushing for Change - New Report Launched

At a time when there are so many negative stories in the press about young people, the Alliance for Inclusive Education (ALLFIE), is launching 'Pushing for Change - The Role of Disabled People's Organisations in Developing Young Disabled Leaders of the Future' - a report of recommended ways to improve young disabled people's inclusion and leadership potential.
The report highlights that young disabled people need to feel part of their communities, families and peer groups if they are to feel confident to seek out leadership roles. The research shows that young people want more choice and control in their lives so they can be leaders.

The report was launched at the House of Lords and hosted by Baroness Jane Campbell of Surbiton DBE. She said: ''Young disabled people make perfect leaders because they learn through experience how to overcome barriers. If they can apply this experience to life in general, they will often unlock some of the barriers all people face in life. Disabled people have already shown leadership in public involvement and inclusive communication; or how to build mutually supportive communities. This project will help unlock more of this talent -- I am thrilled to be launching it'.

The Disability LIB partnership has received £4.2m, over three years, from the Big Lottery BASIS Fund to build the capacity of 200 Disabled People's Organisations (DPOs) across England to have the capacity to fulfil recommendation 4.3 of the governments 'Improving Life Chances' report (A user-led Centre for Independent living in every area by 2010), by becoming more effective and sustainable and to be agents for social change to ensure the full equality and human rights for disabled people.

ALLFIE will deliver these objectives by:

Employing 3 new staff, an Operations Support Officer to support ALLFIE to deliver the project activities, a Project Co-ordinator to oversee the work and to lead on the Leadership Development resources, and a Campaigns & Policy Co-ordinator to lead on the development of a number of campaigning resources.
